Monday Morning Religious Studies Class: The History of the Bible: the Making of the New Testament Canon
The Monday Morning Religious Studies class launches its Fall program, September 8, 10-11:30 a.m., on Zoom, with Professor Bart D. Ehrman’s The History of the Bible: the Making of the New Testament Canon (a Great Courses video lecture course).
Professor Ehrman, the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has authored and edited more than 30 books and articles on early Christianity and related topics. He describes these 12 lectures: “many people today do not know a lot about the New Testament, including such basic facts as what books it contains, when they were written, by whom, when, and for what purpose; how the books were copied and transmitted down through the ages; and when and why they came to be collected together into a canon of Scripture.
“This course is designed to answer these basic questions about the New Testament. We will begin with an overview of what the New Testament contains in broad terms. We will then move to a consideration of the earliest writings of the New Testament, the letters of the apostle Paul. En route, we will consider some basic information about how books were actually written in the ancient world … What writing materials were used? How were books published? How did they get circulated?”
All are welcome to join us for some or all of the lectures on Zoom at bit.ly/LR-ReligiousStudy on Mondays, 10:00-11:30 a.m.
