Our Open and Affirming Community |
|
Little River UCC is committed to living out the Open and Affirming Statement we adopted in 2001. The following actions and events give life to that statement:
-
A group of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning (GLBTQ) persons, along with friends and allies, meets to help keep the congregation aware of concerns and issues and to offer a focused community within the larger community of our congregation.
-
Members of the congregation participate annually in area PRIDE events including the PRIDE Parade.
-
The church informs the Gay/Straight Alliances in area schools that we are an Open and Affirming congregation.
-
The Christian Social Action Committee of the church provides congregants with education and opportunities to become involved in legislative initiatives addressing the rights of the gay and lesbian community.
-
Working with the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry, we host a Movie Café with refreshments the third Wednesday of each month with films featuring LGBT people.
-
Social events strengthen our GLBTQ community within the congregation as we get to know each other in relaxing settings.
Our commitment to being an Open and Affirming congregation means that we are always living between memory and hope – memory of where we started and how far we have come, and hope of bringing words and actions of healing, health, and change in our own congregation and in the world.
